NPMSS’s ‘Tiga Bujang Lapoks’.

“Ada mancis, tapi tak ada rokok… Hmmm macam mana ni?”

Sometimes we do find ourselves, in this state, metaphorically…
No doubt about it - P. Ramlee, Aziz Sattar, S. Shamsuddin are clearly our predecessors and I have so much admiration for the trio’s chemistry and the joys that they bring to the Malay Community then in the early 1960’s.
We’re nowhere near their standards, for real. But I would say the 3 of us are the modern times version of the 3 of them, and insyallah maybe through the years, at least we can, call ourselves ‘Tiga Bujang Lapoks’.
Here, I just wanna take this chance to mention these 2 wonderful gentlemen.
Words cannot describe how much I treasure these two brothers that Allah has sent unto me. I can’t thank him enough for allowing me to meet Brother Sofian & Brother Hanafi because they are truly rare gems.
Brother Abu Sofian: The youngest amongst 3 of us. Tallest. Skinny-Built. A Charismatic Motivational Speaker. A People’s person. An Improv Specialist. A Singer. A Brother. A Filial Son. My Boss for ‘A Special Syawal 2011’.A genuine and generous person - has a lot to give and so much more.
Brother Hanafi:The eldest amongst the 3 of us. Taller than me. Medium-Built. A Cyclist. A Seeker. A genius. Best Infantry Specialist you can ever find. A Hardworker - stays awake the whole entire night doing work whilst dozing off with his laptop as a pillow. A Brother. A Filial Son. The Charismatic Amir of NPMSS 2011. A True Genius and a Humble Seeker.
*I’m still short of many descriptions that i can actually think of for these brothers, but i’ll just halt it here for now.

My Dearest Brothers,
Thank you, literally for making my polytechnic life so much more meaningful. The best of friends that you could possibly have are those whom bring you closer to Allah. Further, we share similar interest in developing ourselves and the people around us to be better individuals, people and muslims. We’re not there yet, with Allah’s permission and guidance, we’re getting there, hence we have to constantly strive to do our very best for every single thing that we do.
I doa that our Ukhwah will remain and grow even stronger not just between the 3 of us, but with the whole of NPMSS brothers and sisters, because I still wanna come back to school often and reminisce those wonderful times we share.
Thank you once again for being you, Brother Sofian and Brother Hanafi.Allah praises to Allah, alhamdulillah.
Sincerely,Firdaus Bin Mohd Abdullah

With the lovely Ms Li Yi
I will never forget that very day when I just had to let all my emotions out, she was there right beside me. She held me up saying,

“Firdaus, we’re all here for you. You’re not in this alone, you have a big team, a big family. I have faith in you to lead the freshmen dancers, so don’t give up now ok. They need you, we need you.”

She’s a big inspiration to me, and she’ll always be.

HMS | Danceforfun 2012 - reminiscing #nineteenthApril

Through all the ups and downs, every start has an ending.
It’s been crazy. I have been rather insomniac for the past few weeks - recollecting the bits and pieces of the journey we had. To be honest, I suck at handling emotions, especially when it comes to dealing with the things that matter to me most. It maliciously tanks within, just like a ticking time-bomb and when it reaches the brim; it explodes.

Boom.

In retrospect, that brings about the drama the team had to go through in less than 48 hours before the competition.

Think about it, how would you feel if the actual choreography was forced to cut short by 20 seconds? The length may seem short to you, but in the context of dance, it means a whole lot. If you’re a dancer, you know that every second on stage means everything.

Put yourself in a dancer’s shoe for instance – you have practised day and night to the song and the rhythm, you put your hearts out, your sweat and tears, and just when you thought you are all geared up, ready to take the world on – the competition states,

“We’re sorry, if you don’t shorten the music, we’ll stop at 3mins sharp.”

I was devastated of course. I mean come on, they can’t be serious right? Yeah I know they have got to be fair with other teams competing. It took me a while to seep that in, and I guess I am still learning that.

Dear you,

If you’re reading this, you might be wondering, what actually happened? I can’t reveal anything more beyond this point. All I can say, that evening when it all happened, I felt helpless. Gah, I needed something to vent that negativity out!

I cried. My seniors cried. Believe it or not, I allowed my freshmen to cry. I thought I had not fulfilled my duty to keep the family tight together. Deep within, I wasn’t angry with anyone. I just felt literally saddened that we couldn’t portray the exact artistry that the choreography initially intended for.

In the turn of events, salvation came in the form of a lovely lady whom unleashed her audio mixing skills and re-made the music possible. Not only she did what she did, it was her soothing words that brought the seniors then the team to see a different perspective. The next morning, a modified routine was made.

Despite all the ups and downs, everything went so well eventually. In actual fact, it wasn’t about prize that was pumped us to pull off the routine successfully, it was the bond and the love to enjoy and share the stage everyone that made us what we were. This is the perfect example of the saying,

When life throw lemons at you, make lemonades.”

Similarly, I have to say, I have so much respects for every other dance teams whom represented their faculty – everyone put up fantastic performance, and I thought all the teams did amazing and brought the whole arena to life!

Today, I shall close this memorable chapter with the video I promised. Thank you for reading; I hope this story has inspired you as much as it has onto me.

Enjoy!

Forging a family of Dancers

Everything happens for a reason. Good or bad, happy or sad.
And of course in any sorts of competition, you win some, you lose some.
Though our eyes were set defending the ‘Danceforfun Championship’, to be honest, my wish on embarking the journey again this year is to build a lasting family of dancers.

Zooming back in early March…
An unexpected call came in the soothing voice of a songstress.

“Hi Firdaus, Miss Li Yi here from HMS, we’re going to need you to come back for one more time. Danceforfun 2012 is coming up, and to groom the freshmen into a champion’s team, I have you in mind. You may or not choose to undertake this project, but hear it from me, I trust you to lead this fresh new team.”

I thought at first, nah… My time’s up, i’m gonna graduate soon. I would rather use the time to work part-time at somewhere, at least secure my family financially before MINDEF officially enlist Recruit Firdaus Bin Mohd Abdullah

“Time to hang those dancing boots up, Fir. You’re too old for this.”

Or perhaps move on with life by taking on the role of full-time house maker – cooking meals and cleaning the house. I’m getting older, and so are my parents. So I gotta make sure that home’s a nice place for the both of them.

It is one of my 2012’s resolutions to be a better son – I would really wanna ensure that my lovely mom returns home every night after her shift work with all the house-work done up coupled with a promising malay-styled dinner waiting for her at the dining-table.

As for my dearest dad, I would want to spend more time with him, you know, chilling and listening to more of his epic adventures as a sailor when he was my age – simply getting him to just enjoy his golden years with his young man.

I tend to think I am the kind of person who would not impulsively chance on any random opportunity. But somehow, I could honestly sense the utmost trust the lovely Ms Li Yi had in me. From the tone of her voice, I knew she was speaking from the heart, all the more reasons that encouraged me to take this project under my wings - to groom and push these young freshmen to become something really galactic.

I am publicly confessing here that I dearly miss these beautiful girls a lot.
My god, it’s so hard for me to come to terms that I actually miss getting whacked, smacked, pinched, punched, pushed, screamed, and everything else that’s fluffy and ‘nice’. Trying to convince and brainwash myself that I don’t, hasn’t be working quite well lately.
Girls.
They just turn you upside-down, inside-out, in the most strangest of feeling, yet in a good way..
________________________________________________________________
If I remember it correctly, the last week of school for them was the most irritating out of the list of ‘Firdaus-being-an-irritant’.
In the midst of finishing up the last bits of assignments, these 3 sinisterish ladies secretly planned for a major birthday bonanza for yours-truly. The most painstaking part of the whole entire planning-process that I am absolutely 100% sure of, was the fact that I was being difficult butt-ass and I couldn’t give a definite answer to my available date of the surprise.
And I don’t wanna go anymore further.. cause you know why? Immediately after that, they unleashed the most deadliest weapon that Women could possibly smack onto Men…
…(wait for it)
A Cold Treatment.
And my goodness, words has it that these ladies were actually buzzing quite a number of people on my contact list to do some crazy stuff in school just for my birthday. And seriously, ladies, a FLASHMOB? #OMGAWD
Okay fine. All the more reasons for the cold treatment. That was so harsh yo. But, you know… I kinda miss that; all of that. And if they were to probably be reading this, they’d be,

” Yah, you deserve that… Siao…”

HAHA. And given a chance to bump to them once more, i don’t mind repeating the cycle once again. :)
Thank you ladies for celebrating my 20th. The aglio-olio that Elizabeth cooked, the Sushi Amanda wrapped, the decoy that Isabel was… and the Karaoke right after that!
Be safe and be good okay, wherever you 3 girls are. #themanybestthingsofmypolylife
